Xbox Gamertag Generator
Ten Xbox gamertags built from words you like, each already checked against Xbox's rules before it is shown. A gamertag is 3 to 12 characters of letters, digits and spaces, starting with a letter, and this page opens with those rules applied, so every handle on screen fits the gamertag field without a dot, an underscore or a thirteenth character to trip it up. Type a favourite thing into Words, pick a clean, gamer, aesthetic or professional style, and press More or the space bar for another ten. Whether a gamertag is still free is something only Xbox can tell you: try it in the console or app settings.
Building handles
Press space or More for another ten. A handle is only shown once it has passed the rules of the platform you chose; the list below says how many of these would also pass elsewhere.
Common questions
- What are the rules for an Xbox gamertag?
- A gamertag is 3 to 12 characters of letters, digits and spaces, and it starts with a letter. Dots, underscores and hyphens are not allowed, which is why the clean and professional styles on this page only give the joined form, riverpixel, and the gamer style gives RiverPixel42 and xRiverx but never River_Pixel. This tool uses no spaces, so every handle it shows is a single run of letters and digits. Xbox also screens gamertags against its own word filter, which this page cannot see.
- Can it tell me if a gamertag is taken?
- No. Availability is held by Xbox and cannot be checked from a page in your browser. On the console open Settings, Account, Customize my profile, Change gamertag, or use the Xbox app, and Xbox says whether the gamertag is available as you type it. Copy the ones you like from here, try them there, and draw another ten if they are all gone.
- What is the number after a gamertag?
- When the exact gamertag you ask for is already taken, Xbox lets you keep it with a suffix, a hash and a few digits, that it assigns and that other players see. The 12-character limit here is for the part you choose; the suffix is separate and is not something you pick. If you would rather not carry a suffix, draw another ten and try a less common one.
- Will the handles use my real name?
- Only if you type it. The bundled word lists, about 400 adjectives and 400 nouns, hold no first names, surnames or brands, so nothing the tool adds can make a gamertag read as a person's name. On Xbox the gamertag is visible to everyone you play with: put a hobby or a favourite thing in the Words field and the tool builds around that instead.
- Why are the handles here so short?
- Because 12 characters is the limit, and every handle is checked before it is shown. Two long words joined together fail the check and are thrown away, so what gets through is the shorter pairs: a four- or five-letter word of yours with a short adjective or noun from the bundled lists. If you type a word of ten or more letters the tool may find only a few that fit, and with a word longer than 12 characters it says so and asks for a shorter one.
Handles are built from your words and the bundled lists, checked against each platform's published length and character rules, and drawn with the browser's cryptographic random generator. Whether a handle is still free is something only the platform can tell you.
