Chipmunk Voice Changer

This page opens the voice changer on its Chipmunk chain: every effect stage off and the rate at 1.8, the sound of a tape played too fast. The recording is resampled so it plays in 0.556 of the time, and every frequency in it is multiplied by 1.8, which is 10.2 semitones up. Because the resonances of the voice rise with the pitch, it sounds small and squeaky rather than simply higher. Record a clip, open a file or try the built-in voice, compare dry and wet, then download a WAV. Move the Rate between 1 and 2 to choose how high it goes, and nothing is uploaded.

Effect chain

The voice runs through these in order, top to bottom. Every change renders again straight away. Arrow keys step a field up or down; Enter or leaving the field applies what you typed.

  1. keeps a band around the center, unity gain there
  2. off: when on, it multiplies by a sine at 80 Hz
  3. tanh(drive x) / tanh(drive): full scale stays full scale
  4. echoes kept until they fall below -60 dB, 5 s at most
  5. 5 Mix100% wet, 0% dry
  6. 6 Ratepitch +10.18 semitones, length x0.56: they move together
  7. off: the level is left exactly as the chain makes it

Open a recording up to 50 MiB and 5 minutes, record one here, or try the built-in voice, which is synthesised in this tab. Press Play or Space to hear it, and the Preview chip to switch between A, the recording as it came in, and B, the effect chain, at the same moment. Download WAV writes the finished result B plays as 16-bit PCM. Nothing is uploaded, and only the chain settings are remembered in this browser, never the audio.

Accuracy. Deterministic effects, not AI: in the same browser, the same recording and settings always give the same WAV, echoes are kept until they fall below -60 dB (5 seconds at most), and clipping is counted rather than hidden. Changing the rate moves pitch and length together, and there is no neural voice conversion, cloning, accent change, disguise of who is speaking or live microphone routing. Audio up to 50 MiB and 5 minutes is decoded in your browser after a format check and is never uploaded.

Common questions

Why is the chipmunk version shorter than my recording?
Pitch and length are tied together here, the way they are on a tape or a record played fast. Rate 1.8 writes 1 / 1.8 = 0.556 as many samples at the same sample rate, so a 10 second clip becomes 5.56 seconds and every frequency is 1.8 times higher. The Rate row prints both numbers for whatever you set. This page has no pitch shift that keeps the length.
How high can I make it?
The Rate goes up to 2, which is exactly one octave, 12 semitones, in half the time. Rate 1.5 is +7.0 semitones and rate 1.25 is +3.9. The semitone figure is 12 times the base-two logarithm of the rate. Before a speed-up the audio is low-pass filtered, so the highest frequencies are lowered in level rather than folding back as a hiss.
Is this the same as a helium voice?
Close, but not the same. Sound travels nearly three times faster in helium than in air, which raises the resonances of your mouth and throat while your vocal folds keep roughly the same pitch. This preset raises both the pitch and the resonances by the same factor, so it is squeakier and faster than real helium. It is the familiar cartoon version, made by a resample rather than a gas.
Can I make my voice deeper instead?
Yes, with the same control. Set the Rate below 1: 0.75 is about 5 semitones down and 1.33 times as long, and 0.5 is one octave down at twice the length. The voice slows as it drops, like a tape running slow.
