Pages to Words Calculator

This page opens Page count to estimate words from pages. Enter a whole or fractional page count, then set the same font, size, spacing, margins and paper as your draft. The result multiplies pages by the displayed words-per-page density. Override that density when your assignment or manuscript convention supplies its own.

Single spaced, at 500 words a page, the same 1,000 words fill 2.0 pages: 2.0 fewer.

Times New Roman 12 pt, double spaced, 1 in margins, US Letter: 23 lines a page at about 10.9 words a line.

The words-a-page figure in the readout is the one being divided by, and it is yours to change: set the font, the size, the spacing, the margins and the paper and it follows them, or type a figure into the last box and it wins outright. Margins read in inches by default and understand 25mm, 2.5cm and 72pt as well. A pasted draft is counted in full in this browser, with no fixed input-size ceiling. Browser memory and processing time are the practical limits, and nothing typed here is uploaded or attached to anything. Your last setting is kept in this browser so the page opens where you left it.

The lengths people set and ask about, divided by the same words-a-page figures as the answer above. Change the font, the size or the margins and every column moves with them.

Accuracy. Words divided by the displayed words-per-page density estimates pages; pages multiplied by that density estimates words. The standard density is 250 for double-spaced 12 point Times, and you can change it. Actual pagination depends on layout, headings and paragraph breaks; check a finished document in its word processor. The figure the settings give is worked out from the page you describe: the text area left inside the margins, the line height the size and spacing produce, an average English word of 5.7 characters with its space, and a line that fills about 73 percent of its width once the ragged right edge and the short last line of each paragraph are allowed for. That calibration puts the standard page, 12 point Times New Roman double spaced on US Letter with 1 in margins, at 23 lines of about 10.9 words: the conventional 250 words a page, and 500 single spaced.

Common questions

How many words is three to five double-spaced pages?
At the standard 250 words per page, three pages is about 750 words and five is about 1,250. At the 500-word single-spaced density, the range is about 1,500 to 2,500 words. Calculate each endpoint using the same settings.
Can I use a partial page or custom density?
Yes. 2.5 pages at 300 words per page is about 750 words. The override replaces the layout estimate. It cannot measure whether a real page is full or how illustrations and headings change its density.
Can this count words in an Apple Pages document?
It does not open a Pages, Word or PDF file. Use the word-count feature in that app for a finished document, or copy its text into Pasted text here. Page count is an estimate from a supplied number of pages, not a document parser.
