Webcam and Microphone Test
Check your camera picture and microphone input together before a call. This page starts with the microphone option enabled, but neither device opens until you press Start camera and microphone. Grant each permission, choose the camera and audio input separately, then speak and watch the meter. The webcam preview shows actual delivered dimensions, mirror and fullscreen controls, plus a measured frame-counter rate where available. The audio meter reports digital RMS and peak dBFS; it does not measure acoustic room loudness. A denied microphone does not close a working camera. Both media streams stay local with no recording or media upload. Use Stop to release them, or stop the microphone separately.
Your browser asks for permission first. The picture stays in this page and nothing is recorded.

Microphone check
Speak and watch the meter. Camera and microphone permissions are separate; a refused input does not close the other stream.
Microphone is closed
No samples measured yet
The meter shows the digital input received by the browser, not room loudness in dB SPL. Audio is not routed to your speakers or recorded here. Use Microphone playback and levels for a separate recording/playback test.
The camera is closed. Nothing is being watched until you press Start.

What the numbers mean
Resolution buttons request preferred sizes, not guaranteed modes. The page reports the track settings, then the decoded picture dimensions when a frame arrives. FPS uses the presented-frame counter, or a playback-quality frame counter when available. Changes in playback time are never counted as frames. Until a rate is measured, the negotiated value is labelled separately. This browser check cannot prove what Zoom, Teams or another app will receive; test their selected camera and microphone inside that app too.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A picture, with a resolution and a rate | The camera opened and is delivering frames to this page. | Press Stop to release this page's camera track. |
| Permission refused | Camera access was not granted to this page. This does not diagnose the hardware. | Follow the steps in the panel, then press Start again. |
| No camera found | There is no camera for the browser to open. | Connect one or switch it on, then press Start again. |
| Camera could not be read | Another application, a driver or system access settings may be involved. | Close the call or the recording software, then press Start again. |
Common questions
- How do I test a webcam with a built-in microphone?
- Press Start camera and microphone, grant the separate permissions, then choose the webcam in Camera and its audio input in Microphone. Some devices expose the microphone under a different label, and a system default may be your laptop mic. Speak near the intended input and check the meter. This is useful for Logitech or other USB webcam microphones, but it does not install drivers or identify hardware that the browser cannot see.
- What should I do if the camera works but the microphone is blocked?
- Keep the preview open and check the site and system microphone permissions. Camera and microphone permissions are independent. On Windows, check Privacy or Privacy & security, Microphone, including desktop-app access; on macOS, use Privacy & Security, Microphone for the browser. Select System default if a chosen input disappeared, then press Start microphone. A refusal does not prove the microphone is broken. You can also stop or cancel either input.
- What do RMS, peak and dBFS mean on the microphone meter?
- RMS describes the average sampled digital signal level; peak is the highest absolute sample in that reading. Both use digital full scale as the reference: 0 dBFS is full scale, and quieter nonzero signals have negative readings. Digital zero is shown as silence. The bar maps RMS from minus 60 to 0 dBFS and clamps outside that range. This is not a calibrated decibel sound-pressure measurement, loudness rating or hearing test. Hardware or browser processing can still affect the input.
- Can I hear a playback or record a camera and microphone clip?
- This page does not record either input and does not route live microphone audio to the speakers, which avoids creating a feedback loop. Speak to check that samples reach the meter. For a separate recorded microphone playback check, open Mic Test. There is no webcam video recording or combined audio/video download here.
- Does this test prove that Zoom, Teams or Google Meet will work?
- It confirms only what this browser page receives from the selected local inputs. After checking framing and audio levels, use your call app's own preview or test call and select the same intended devices there. Network quality, app processing, remote participants and exam-provider compatibility are outside this test. Stop this page's streams if another app cannot open the inputs.
- Does the microphone option override saved settings or open devices automatically?
- It is enabled on this page regardless of your saved mirror and resolution preferences. Starting remains explicit and requires the browser permissions. Microphone choice and permission are never stored by this tool. Mirror and resolution are the only remembered preferences, and only after you change them.
- How do I stop or cancel the camera and microphone?
- Stop camera and microphone releases both current streams. Cancel camera request also invalidates any pending request; a late grant is closed without showing a stale preview. Stop microphone cancels or releases audio alone. Leaving this page or replacing a selected input releases the previous stream. Another application can still be using the same device.
Shows browser-reported camera settings and decoded picture size. Frame rate is measured from an available frame counter, otherwise labelled as negotiated. Optional audio levels are relative to digital full scale, not room loudness. It cannot know what another app receives. Nothing is recorded or uploaded by this tool.
