Hourly Wage Calculator

The hourly figure leads on this page. Type a rate and the year, the month, the fortnight and the week follow on the strip beneath it, from the hours a week and the weeks a year you set rather than from an assumed 40 hour, 52 week job. Switch the Per control to Year and type a salary instead, and the large figure becomes the hourly rate that salary works out to. Everything here is gross pay, and the paid hours behind each answer are printed beside it so you can see where the number came from.

The same pay, every period

One year of pay written seven ways. Each row is the year divided by its own count of pay days, so every row multiplies back to the same year.

Worked examples

  • A monthly figure3,800 a month, 40 hours a week
3,800.00 a month, at 40 hours a week over 52 weeks, is 45,600.00 a year, 876.92 a week and 21.92 an hour, across 2,080 paid hours. Every figure is pay before anything is held back.
  • A salary to an hourly rate68,000 a year, 37.5 hours a week
68,000.00 a year, at 37.5 hours a week over 52 weeks, is 5,666.67 a month, 1,307.69 a week and 34.87 an hour, across 1,950 paid hours. Every figure is pay before anything is held back.
  • Two weeks unpaid22.00 an hour, 50 of 52 weeks paid
22.00 an hour, at 40 hours a week over 50 paid weeks (52 weeks with 2 unpaid), is 44,000.00 a year, 3,666.67 a month and 880.00 a week, across 2,000 paid hours. Every figure is pay before anything is held back.
Twice a month is not every two weeks. A payroll that pays on the 15th and the last day runs 24 times a year; one that pays every second Friday runs 26. The same salary therefore makes two different pay slips, and both are in the table above rather than one standing in for the other. Unpaid weeks come off the weeks you are paid for: enter them and the hourly, daily, weekly and fortnightly rows follow the shorter year, while a monthly or yearly figure stays the same money spread across fewer worked hours.
Gross pay, and only gross pay. There is no box on this page for anything held back from a pay packet, and no country, state or city setting, because the conversion is the same arithmetic everywhere and the amounts kept back are not. Exact conversion of the gross figure you enter across every pay period, with the hours, days and weeks you set. It cannot know taxes, deductions, overtime rules or unpaid time you did not enter, so this is pay before deductions and not take-home pay.

Common questions

What is 20.00 an hour a year?
41,600.00 gross, on a 40 hour week and 52 paid weeks, which is 2,080 paid hours. The same rate is 3,466.67 a month, 1,600.00 every two weeks and 800.00 a week. Change any of the boxes and all of those move together, because each one is the same year divided by its own number of pay days.
What if I do not work 40 hours a week?
Put your hours in the Hours a week box and the year is rebuilt on them. At 20.00 an hour, a 37.5 hour week is 39,000.00 a year over 1,950 paid hours, and a 30 hour week is 31,200.00 over 1,560. Part time hours are exactly where a page that assumes a 40 hour week goes wrong, so this one asks.
How do I turn a salary into an hourly wage?
Set the Per control to Year and type the salary. 60,000.00 a year on a 40 hour week and 52 weeks is 28.85 an hour, and 52,000.00 is 25.00. The divisor is the paid hours in your year, so 2,080 for a full time year and fewer if you enter part time hours or unpaid weeks.
Do unpaid weeks change my hourly rate?
Not the rate you typed: they change the year it adds up to. Two unpaid weeks take 20.00 an hour from 41,600.00 to 40,000.00 a year, because you are paid for 50 weeks rather than 52. Coming the other way, a 60,000.00 salary with two unpaid weeks is still 60,000.00 but covers 2,000 paid hours, so it reads as 30.00 an hour instead of 28.85.
Is this hourly figure before or after take-home pay?
It is gross pay, the figure before anything is held back. What comes off depends on where you live and what you have signed up to, and it changes from year to year, so this page does the conversion between periods, which is the same arithmetic everywhere, and leaves the rest to your pay slip.

Exact conversion of the gross figure you enter across every pay period, with the hours, days and weeks you set. It cannot know taxes, deductions, overtime rules or unpaid time you did not enter, so this is pay before deductions and not take-home pay.
