Monthly Wage Calculator

This page opens with the monthly figure in front. Enter what you are paid in any period, hourly, daily, weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or a year, and the month is the number in large type, with the year, the fortnight, the week and the hour on the strip under it. A month is not four weeks: 52 weeks over 12 months is 4.33 weeks in an average one, which is why 800.00 a week is 3,466.67 a month rather than 3,200.00. Every figure is gross pay, and the hours, days and weeks behind it are yours to set.

The same pay, every period

One year of pay written seven ways. Each row is the year divided by its own count of pay days, so every row multiplies back to the same year.

Worked examples

  • A monthly figure3,800 a month, 40 hours a week
3,800.00 a month, at 40 hours a week over 52 weeks, is 45,600.00 a year, 876.92 a week and 21.92 an hour, across 2,080 paid hours. Every figure is pay before anything is held back.
  • A salary to an hourly rate68,000 a year, 37.5 hours a week
68,000.00 a year, at 37.5 hours a week over 52 weeks, is 5,666.67 a month, 1,307.69 a week and 34.87 an hour, across 1,950 paid hours. Every figure is pay before anything is held back.
  • Two weeks unpaid22.00 an hour, 50 of 52 weeks paid
22.00 an hour, at 40 hours a week over 50 paid weeks (52 weeks with 2 unpaid), is 44,000.00 a year, 3,666.67 a month and 880.00 a week, across 2,000 paid hours. Every figure is pay before anything is held back.
Twice a month is not every two weeks. A payroll that pays on the 15th and the last day runs 24 times a year; one that pays every second Friday runs 26. The same salary therefore makes two different pay slips, and both are in the table above rather than one standing in for the other. Unpaid weeks come off the weeks you are paid for: enter them and the hourly, daily, weekly and fortnightly rows follow the shorter year, while a monthly or yearly figure stays the same money spread across fewer worked hours.
Gross pay, and only gross pay. There is no box on this page for anything held back from a pay packet, and no country, state or city setting, because the conversion is the same arithmetic everywhere and the amounts kept back are not. Exact conversion of the gross figure you enter across every pay period, with the hours, days and weeks you set. It cannot know taxes, deductions, overtime rules or unpaid time you did not enter, so this is pay before deductions and not take-home pay.

Common questions

How do I work out my monthly wage from an hourly rate?
Multiply the hour by the hours you are paid for in a week and by the weeks you are paid for in a year, then divide by 12. At 20.00 an hour, 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, the year is 41,600.00 and the month is 3,466.67. The tool does both steps as you type, and the paid hours behind the figure, 2,080 in that example, are printed beside it.
Is a monthly wage the same as four weekly pay packets?
No, and the difference is a month's rent over a year. Twelve months hold 52 weeks, so the average month is 4.33 weeks: 800.00 a week is 3,466.67 a month, not 3,200.00. Four pay packets do land in most months and five in a couple of them, which is the same total said a different way.
What is 48,000 a year a month?
4,000.00 gross a month. On a 40 hour week and 52 weeks that is also 923.08 a week and 23.08 an hour across 2,080 paid hours. Type 48000 in the Pay box with the Per control on Year and every one of those figures is on the page at once.
My payroll runs twice a month. Is that the same as every two weeks?
It is not. Twice a month is 24 pay days a year and every two weeks is 26, so 2,000.00 twice a month is 4,000.00 a month and 48,000.00 a year, while 2,000.00 every two weeks is 4,333.33 a month and 52,000.00 a year. Both are rows in the table, and the Per control has both, so you can enter whichever one your slip shows.
Is the monthly figure before or after what is held back?
Before. Every figure here is gross pay. What comes off a pay packet depends on where you live and what you have signed up to, and it changes from year to year, so this page converts the gross figure across periods and leaves the rest to your pay slip.

Exact conversion of the gross figure you enter across every pay period, with the hours, days and weeks you set. It cannot know taxes, deductions, overtime rules or unpaid time you did not enter, so this is pay before deductions and not take-home pay.
